Joe Mannix, "White Flag"
(Bongo Beat)
|
| Mannix is
part of the singer-songwriter movement you imagine is swarming New
York at the moment. He's good. His album isn't
startling but it is consistent. He crafts his
songs with care and sings them with a soulfulness that sometimes slips
into a keening and affecting falsetto. WHITE FLAG goes from
a folkie solo lonsesomeness as in "Light After The darkness"
to fuller folk-rock arrangements as in "Silver Girl", "Higher
Intervention" or "Movin' On". The forlorn voice recalls
John Lennon solo, while Neil Young, circa HARVEST, might have been
an influence. Check out "A Meditation". 3 STARS (out of
5). Review by Tom Harrison |
