Mannix has the heart of a sixties avant-folkster,
akin to the likes of PF Sloan and Phil Ochs. But he also has the head
for strong, pop melody too. His first solo record, after having released
two records with his roots-pop band Mannix,
reveals an intimate storyteller whose presence as a vocalist reflects
the heartfelt depths of his soulful songwriting. From the pity
of abandoned love, as in the simple acoustic ballad "House Is
Not A Home", on into the uplifting hope of a better tomorrow,
like the full band roots-pop groove of "Moving On", Mannix
has a natural passion that is comfortable and familiar. White Flag
was produced by Glenn Marshall (engineer for Daniel Lanois) and Canadian
roots-pop icon Dave Rave, who also has formal Lanois connections,
at a studio wired by Daniel's brother Bob, so some of that production
mentality figures in the depth and spaciousness of the overall sound.
