August 17, 2001 Wilmington Star - Wilmington, North Carolina
"Joe is an incredible performer. He's been known to climb up on anything he can get his hands on," Mr. Kasiewicz said. "I've seen him jump off stage and do a somersault with his guitar and not miss a beat."

June 30, 2001 The Washington Times - Washington, D.C.
"..I liked the quartet so much, I bought the CD...The self-produced "Come to California" is clearly deserving of a wider audience than an independent label can give it. (Are you listening, majors?)"

"There's no slump in sight for NYC roots-rock/pop band Mannix."

June 14, 2001 Dead Flowers - Brooklyn, New York
"Lusciously recorded and so expertly sung (Joe and Chris Peck have long refined a near Everly-like vocal rapport), but most importantly impeccably written, arranged and performed, this could very well be the pop opera to end ALL pop operas!"

June 8, 2001 Washington Post - Washington, D.C.
"Come to California," the 16-song, two-CD set from Mannix, is the rare rock "concept album" that sustains a coherent narrative from start to finish...Joe Mannix has a real gift for writing pop hooks and for giving romantic problems the specifics of real life."

May 2001 Shake It Up - Toronto, Canada
"Following up Pretty Strange with this two-CD opus may be quite ambitious, but Mannix manage to keep Come To California flowing quite easily and enjoyably throughout the sixteen tracks here."

May 20, 2001 Power of Pop - Singapore
"I refuse to be a part of the dumbing of American pop culture. It seems like everyone wants to be able to pigeon hole your sound or your look etc.."

May 15, 2001 Amplifier Magazine - Pawtucket, Rhode Island
"...I wanted a CD that was a full listening experience. I was looking to get away from the straight-ahead, cookie-cutter rock and roll format and do something different. With Come to California it was my intention to tell a story. I went back to my full-band format to tell the story of a man's obsession to get back what he can't have. It's a story of love, obsession, addiction, redemption and salvation."

April 30, 2001 IndieMonkey - Asheville, North Carolinia
"...this isn't really an album to dip in and out of; you'll want to savour it all in one go, and writing this in the dreary, grey surroundings of dear old England, the prospect of a trip to California is made ever more enticing with each listen to this very rewarding album."

April 22, 2001 New York Area Power Pop Page - New York, New York
"Mannix' new album is a total delight...In conclusion, this album is a sure hit"

April 6, 2001 San Antonio Express-News - San Antonio, Texas
"...Mannix is also a painter and his songs, like his pictures, are vivid. The man uses words to sketch life with all it's rough edges and hard surfaces but also with enough hope to keep listeners from looking to leap. Pay attention and you'll be rewarded."

April 1, 2001 New York Area Power Pop Page - New York, New York
"...Joe did not need to crowd the mike, his powerful voice filled the room. When he plays with a band, he jumps up and down and climbs on top of anything nearby, but on this night he restrained himself and just stomped his foot in time on a couple of occasions."

March 1, 2001 Pop Matters - Singapore
"...Come to California, apart from being a first-rate set of quality roots rock is at the same time, an ambitious song cycle concept album...To deliver sixteen songs of such consistent strength, both musically and conceptually, is an achievement worthy of trumpeting from the highest ground...."

May 2000 Aquarian
"The much anticipated follow up to last year's near brilliant Pretty Strange finds guitarist/vocalist Joe Mannix and drummer/harmony vocalist Chris Peck incorporating bassist Toby Graham and guitarist Todd Le Cuyer into the mix for the denser, heavier, even more radio friendly pop sound that drives Come to California."

May 15, 2000 The Power of POP - Singapore

Review of the "Come to California' Four-Song Sampler

"With deceptive ease and simplicity, Mannix has encapsulated the revolutionary essence of rock and tattooed its message on the conceptual flesh that animates this work with a vengeance."

May 8, 2000 Here's what critic Robin Wills, Bucketfull of Brains (UK), said after hearing the finished product.
"The new Mannix album "Come to California" has just been completed. It's less acoustic based than "Pretty Strange" and more of a band effort. I don't like the term concept album, but there is story being told here through the 15 songs. This album certainly proves that Joe Mannix is the most important US songwriter since Warren Zevon and he is ably surrounded by a band that help bring his ideas to full fruition. "Flag and my Flower", "Best Suit", "Go West" and "Gasoline" are prime slices from a modern American classic."

April 3, 2000 Bucketfull of Brains -- London, England
