The Power of Pop

Review of the "Come to California" Four-Song Sampler
by Kevin Mathews, Singapore

May 15, 2000

Frontier rock. Wide open spaces, pioneering instincts, creative economy and proven craft. Imbued with a highly developed sensitivity to the best qualities of roughly hewn country-folk rock and the melodic mayhem of power pop, the new material presented by NYC band Mannix on their 4 track sampler (coupled with the tracks already previewed via Highway Lines at mp3.com and Geraldine on the 20th Century BOB freebie CD) is evidence of Mannix's continued development in the scheme of things.

If being true to your personal artistic vision represents the ultimate punk rock ambition, then Mannix possesses much more uncompromising DIY spirit than a million Bad Religions. If the epitome of this rock and roll spirit is personified in the talent and verve of someone like Neil Young, then Mannix has tapped into Young's mojo.

With deceptive ease and simplicity, Mannix has encapsulated the revolutionary essence of rock and tattooed its message on the conceptual flesh that animates this work with a vengeance.
