Mannix, "Come to California"
by Sherman Boim
April 22, 2001

Mannix' new album is a total delight. This band is led by Joe Mannix, who lives in Queens. The packaging of the album is luxurious, a bonus thrown in at no extra cost. Fifty-three minutes of music on two disks, with a double jewel case and a smartly illustrated sixteen-page booklet with complete lyrics.

But the music on this album is more astounding than the lavish packaging. What does the consumer look for when buying an album? Interesting lyrics? Check. Beautiful melodies? Yes. Accomplished production? It's here. Proficient instrument playing? You have it. Great vocals? Joe's voice reaches the high notes with clarity and is for me, Mannix's greatest selling point.

This is a concept album about a man who is driven to return to the West, enticed by the memories of a former love, Geraldine, only to find a reality different than the ideal. The lyrics broaden that example to speak of the power of love to change a person.

"Come to California's" sixteen songs are varied and wonderful guitar-based rock, and there are also examples of "roots rock" for those who enjoy a folksier touch. My favorite cut is "Sunshine", whose title belies the sadness of the lyric. This is an achingly beautiful ballad of renewal after a loss. Joe's carefully styled phrasing brings out the strong emotional feelings of sadness and hope. I like the double guitar in the break as well.

In conclusion, this album is a sure hit. Go to mannixrock.com and Come to California!
